Cost effective Spring bathroom makeover tips

Daylight savings has begun and I’ve packed away my winter coats.

This can only mean one thing, spring is here.

The days are longer, the air is hotter and the sun shines brighter. Spring is a wonderful time. When Spring temperatures start, I always find myself with more motivation, especially when it comes to taking on home projects. If you’re a fan of a good Spring clean, don’t stop at cleaning, also treat yourself to an interior update.

You might be thinking, “hang on, I don’t want to take on a complete renovation! I don’t have the time, the money, the this and the that…” – Completely valid thoughts. Renovations can be costly and time consuming. With Christmas around the corner, you don’t want to be throwing money into a complete bathroom makeover, nor do you want to miss out any sunshine because you committed to spending weekends fixing your home.

However wouldn’t it be nice to come home to a revitalised  bathroom, without going through a traditional renovation? This week I’m going to share with you my top tips for an easy and cost effective bathroom Spring makeover.

1. A new shower screen

Believe it or not, shower screens can go out of fashion. An effective way to make your bathroom feel like a new room, is to replace your existing shower screen with a more contemporary design. Pivotech offer an incredible range of aluminium shower screens in fashionable finishes. Pivotech’s Momentum shower screen, in natural anodised is my pick.  Momentum is a semi-frameless sliding shower screen. Not just a pretty face, the design also allows for better cleaning (a big bonus for Spring cleaning). Pivotech designed Momentum with unique spring loaded carriages under the sill, these allow the door to be tilted for greater access when cleaning. 2. Show your tiles some love

Black and white bathroom design ideas

Nothing will make your bathroom appear bigger, brighter and lighter than new tiles. This Spring, white tiles are a must.  The best thing about while tiles is every tile supplier will have them in stock. You can pick up a really beautiful tile, without breaking your budget. If you already have white tiles, give your bathroom some love and invest in re-grouting. Fresh white, or grey grout is an effective way to make your bathroom look new.

If these two options sound a little too much work, make sure you at least give all your tiles, and grout a really good clean. Nothing makes a bathroom look more tired than mouldy tiles. My tip to a thorough clean – use an old toothbrush lightly between each tile to really get into your grout. For more bathroom cleaning tips, click here.

3. Introduce an accent colour

Pop right into Spring with colour! Lemon, sherbet and ocean blue are my trend predications. Bathrooms offer endless opportunity for accent colours. If you’re game, try one of the following to instantly transform your bathroom:

  • Apply a new fresh seasonal colour to your vanity. On timber surfaces, a coat of paint will make a world of difference. For laminate vanities, keep costs down by using laminate paint instead of replacing your joinery.
  • Treat yourself to brightly coloured geometric print towels. Nothing says Spring time like new fluffy towels with tropical coloured zig-zags, spots and stripes.
  • Candles in painted pots are a simple and effective way to introduce an accent hue. This bright pop of colour will not only make your bathroom look good, it will also smell delicious.

4. Fresh flowers

It’s Spring, there are flowers everywhere. Bring the pretty buds inside and fill your bathroom with them. Viola! Instant Spring perfection, I promise.

Bathroom facelifts don’t get easier than this.

5. Timber look floors

Try something different to traditional tiled floors, consider timber laminate. Save yourself some money and achieve a fresh Spring interior with luxury vinyl tiles. Laminate planks are made with photo imaging technology, meaning they actually look like real timber. Easy to install and fabulous to look at. Give your bathroom a super trendy facelift with a brand new floor.

Get crafty, make your own soy candles

Remember reading tip number three? Introduce accent colour with colourful candle pots. Why not have a go at making some candles yourself? Soy candles are everywhere at the moment. Jump on the bandwagon and set aside an afternoon to get candle crafty…

This recipe makes six small candles. Depending on the size of your coloured pot plans, you might need to double or triple the recipe. My advice is make your candles first in glasses, then sit them in your colour pots. This way you can simply replace the candles as they burn through without needing to purchase new decorative pots.

The candle essentials

  • Newspaper
  • 6 small candle glasses
  • 500g white soy wax
  • Double saucepan
  • 1 tsp pure essential oil of choice (something fruity would be my pick)
  • Ladle
  • 6 tabbed wicks
  • 1 skewer
  • 6 clothes pegs
  • Scissors

Step one

Prepare your work area close to the stove. Lay down newspaper in case any wax is spilled, then arrange glasses on top. Melt wax in the top of a double saucepan over simmering water. Add essential oil; stir.

Step two

Use ladle to carefully pour wax into the glasses. Place wicks in each glass, positioning with the skewer. Hold wicks in place by securing at the top with a peg. Leave to set overnight.

Step three

The next day, if the wax has dipped in the centre of the candles, melt more wax and top up. Once set, use scissors to trim wicks to 0.5cm in length.

Step four

Sit your glass candles into your pots and place around your bathroom.
